Dr. Roy Madigan, D.V.M., is not just a veterinarian. He is one of the leading experts in canine Chagas disease in the United States.

• Founder of Vida Pharmacal, focused on breakthrough parasitic disease treatments
• Filed the first veterinary drug patent for anti-T. cruzi activity in dogs
• Principal scientist for the U.S. military working dog Chagas treatment study
• Veterinary lead for the Texas Chagas Task Force alongside the CDC and UT Health
• Pioneer in developing diagnostic and treatment protocols for infected dogs

Your pet is being treated by the same expert helping shape how Chagas disease is understood nationwide.

Get In Touch

Chagas disease progresses in stages. The earlier it is identified:

• The more treatment options are available
• The better heart damage can be managed
• The higher the chance of improving quality of life

Waiting can mean irreversible cardiac damage.

Early Detection. Advanced Treatment. Led by One of the Nation’s Top Experts.

Do not wait for symptoms to appear.

Chagas disease is often silent early on, but warning signs may include:

• Lethargy or decreased activity
• Fainting or collapse
• Irregular heartbeat
• Difficulty breathing
• Unexplained weight loss

If your dog spends time outdoors, lives in Central Texas, or has been exposed to insects, they may be at risk even without symptoms.

If your dog may have been exposed to kissing bugs, do not wait. Chagas disease can silently damage the heart before symptoms appear. Early diagnosis can make the difference.

At Central Texas Vet, we go beyond standard testing.
Dr. Madigan is actively developing advanced serologic testing methods to improve detection accuracy.

Your dog’s evaluation may include:

• Comprehensive physical exam
• Cardiac screening
• Specialized blood testing for T. cruzi
• Advanced diagnostics when needed

Early detection allows for better management and improved outcomes.

Chagas disease is caused by the parasite Trypanosoma cruzi, transmitted by “kissing bugs” commonly found in Texas.
Once infected, dogs may appear normal while the parasite attacks the heart and other organs.

Without intervention, Chagas can lead to:

• Heart disease
• Arrhythmias
• Sudden death

Questions? We Have Answers

If your dog may be at risk, schedule an evaluation today and get answers from one of the leading experts in the field.

Firework Safety for Pets on Memorial Day
Memorial Day marks the start of summer. For many families, that includes barbecues, gatherings, and fireworks. For pets, it often means something very different.Loud, unpredictable noises can trigger fear, anxiety, and even dangerous behavior. Each year, veterinary clinics see an increase in lost pets, injuries, and stress-related issues tied directly to fireworks.Preparation changes that outcome. With a few intentional steps, you can make Memorial Day safer and far less stressful for your pet.
Why Fireworks Affect Pets So Strongly
Fireworks are not just loud. They are sudden, irregular, and impossible for pets to anticipate. Dogs and cats rely heavily on sound awareness, so these bursts can feel overwhelming and threatening. Many pets respond by trying to escape. Others hide, tremble, pace, or refuse to eat. In more severe cases, pets can injure themselves attempting to get away from the noise. This is not bad behavior. It is a fear response. The goal is not to correct it, but to manage the environment so your pet feels more secure.
How to Prepare Your Pet Before Fireworks Start
The most effective time to act is before the first firework goes off. Start by bringing pets indoors early, even if they typically spend time outside. A fenced yard is not enough when a frightened pet is looking for a way out.Create a quiet, enclosed space inside your home. This could be a bedroom, a crate your pet already associates with comfort, or a low-traffic area where noise is less intense. Add familiar items like bedding, toys, or a piece of your clothing. These small details help signal safety. Background noise also helps. A television, fan, or calming music can soften the sharp contrast of fireworks and reduce how startling each sound feels. If your pet has shown anxiety in the past, this is the time to talk with your veterinarian. There may be safe options, including behavioral strategies or medications, that can make a meaningful difference.
During Fireworks: What Matters Most
Once fireworks begin, your focus shifts to keeping your pet contained and supported.Keep doors and windows closed, and double check that screens and gates are secure. Even pets that have never tried to escape may react differently under stress.Stay calm in your own behavior. Pets take cues from their environment, and a steady presence can help reduce escalation. You do not need to force comfort, but being nearby and predictable matters.Avoid bringing pets to firework displays. What feels like a fun outing for people can quickly become overwhelming and unsafe for animals.
Preventing the Most Common Risk: Lost Pets
One of the biggest risks during Memorial Day is pets getting loose.Microchipping is one of the most reliable safeguards, but it only works if your contact information is current. ID tags should also be clearly readable and attached to a secure collar. If your pet does get out, having accurate identification dramatically increases the chance of a safe return.
Small Details That Make a Big Difference
Some of the most effective steps are simple. Exercise your dog earlier in the day so they are more relaxed by evening. Feed meals on a normal schedule to maintain routine. Close curtains or blinds to reduce visual stimulation from flashes of light. These are not complicated changes, but together they create a more stable environment when it matters.
When to Involve Your Veterinarian
If your pet experiences severe anxiety, including nonstop pacing, vocalizing, or attempts to escape, it is worth having a conversation with your veterinarian before the holiday. There are safe, evidence-based approaches that can help manage fear responses. Waiting until the moment fireworks begin often limits your options.

Protect your pet this Memorial Day with firework safety tips from veterinarians. Learn how to reduce anxiety, prevent escapes, and keep pets safe during celebrations.
