Dr. Roy Madigan, D.V.M., is not just a veterinarian. He is one of the leading experts in canine Chagas disease in the United States.

• Founder of Vida Pharmacal, focused on breakthrough parasitic disease treatments
• Filed the first veterinary drug patent for anti-T. cruzi activity in dogs
• Principal scientist for the U.S. military working dog Chagas treatment study
• Veterinary lead for the Texas Chagas Task Force alongside the CDC and UT Health
• Pioneer in developing diagnostic and treatment protocols for infected dogs

Your pet is being treated by the same expert helping shape how Chagas disease is understood nationwide.

Get In Touch

Chagas disease progresses in stages. The earlier it is identified:

• The more treatment options are available
• The better heart damage can be managed
• The higher the chance of improving quality of life

Waiting can mean irreversible cardiac damage.

Early Detection. Advanced Treatment. Led by One of the Nation’s Top Experts.

Do not wait for symptoms to appear.

Chagas disease is often silent early on, but warning signs may include:

• Lethargy or decreased activity
• Fainting or collapse
• Irregular heartbeat
• Difficulty breathing
• Unexplained weight loss

If your dog spends time outdoors, lives in Central Texas, or has been exposed to insects, they may be at risk even without symptoms.

If your dog may have been exposed to kissing bugs, do not wait. Chagas disease can silently damage the heart before symptoms appear. Early diagnosis can make the difference.

At Central Texas Vet, we go beyond standard testing.
Dr. Madigan is actively developing advanced serologic testing methods to improve detection accuracy.

Your dog’s evaluation may include:

• Comprehensive physical exam
• Cardiac screening
• Specialized blood testing for T. cruzi
• Advanced diagnostics when needed

Early detection allows for better management and improved outcomes.

Chagas disease is caused by the parasite Trypanosoma cruzi, transmitted by “kissing bugs” commonly found in Texas.
Once infected, dogs may appear normal while the parasite attacks the heart and other organs.

Without intervention, Chagas can lead to:

• Heart disease
• Arrhythmias
• Sudden death

Questions? We Have Answers

If your dog may be at risk, schedule an evaluation today and get answers from one of the leading experts in the field.

Heartworm Awareness Month: Protecting Your Pet from a Preventable Disease
April is Heartworm Awareness Month, a time to highlight one of the most serious yet preventable diseases affecting pets. Heartworm disease can cause severe damage to the heart, lungs, and blood vessels, and in advanced cases it can become life-threatening. The good news is that with consistent prevention and routine veterinary care, heartworm disease is largely avoidable.Understanding how heartworms spread and how prevention works can help keep your pet safe all year long.
What Is Heartworm Disease?
Heartworm disease is caused by a parasitic worm called Dirofilaria immitis. These worms live in the heart, lungs, and surrounding blood vessels of infected animals, where they can cause inflammation, lung disease, and heart failure if left untreated. The disease spreads through mosquito bites. When a mosquito carrying heartworm larvae bites a dog or cat, the larvae enter the bloodstream and begin developing into adult worms. Over several months, the worms grow and eventually settle in the heart and pulmonary arteries.Because only one infected mosquito is needed to transmit the disease, any pet that spends time outdoors can be at risk.
Why Heartworm Disease Is So Serious
Heartworms can grow up to a foot long and live inside the blood vessels that connect the heart and lungs. As the worms multiply, they interfere with circulation and place increasing strain on the heart.Early infections often show few obvious symptoms. As the disease progresses, pets may develop signs such as coughing, fatigue, difficulty exercising, or breathing problems. In severe cases, heartworm disease can lead to heart failure or permanent damage to the lungs and other organs.Treatment is possible but can be complex and carries risks. Preventing the disease in the first place is far safer and easier for pets and their families.
Why Prevention Matters
Heartworm disease has been reported in all 50 states, and the number of infections continues to rise in many regions. Experts estimate that more than one million dogs in the United States are infected each year.Even indoor pets can be exposed since mosquitoes can enter homes through open doors or windows. This is why veterinarians recommend consistent prevention for both dogs and cats.
How to Protect Your Pet from Heartworms
Preventing heartworm disease is simple and highly effective when done consistently. Most prevention plans include a combination of medication and routine testing.Veterinary-approved heartworm preventives are available as monthly chewable tablets, topical medications, or long-acting injections. When given on schedule, these medications stop heartworm larvae before they can mature into adult worms.Regular testing is also important. Dogs are typically tested annually for heartworm infection, even if they are on preventive medication, to ensure that protection remains effective.Reducing mosquito exposure can also help. Eliminating standing water around the home, keeping pets indoors during peak mosquito activity, and maintaining preventive medication all contribute to lower risk.
A Simple Step That Protects Long Term Health
Heartworm prevention is one of the easiest ways to protect your pet’s health. Compared to the complexity and risks of treating heartworm disease, preventive care is safer, more affordable, and far less stressful for pets and their families.During Heartworm Awareness Month, it is a great time to review your pet’s prevention plan and ensure they are protected year-round.
Talk to Your Veterinary Team
If you are unsure whether your pet is up to date on heartworm prevention or testing, your veterinary team can help. A simple conversation during your pet’s wellness visit can ensure they are receiving the protection they need.Preventive care plays a powerful role in keeping pets healthy. By staying consistent with heartworm prevention, you can help protect your dog or cat from a serious but preventable disease.

Learn how heartworm disease spreads, the symptoms to watch for, and how year-round prevention can protect dogs and cats from this serious parasite.
