Dr. Roy Madigan, D.V.M., is not just a veterinarian. He is one of the leading experts in canine Chagas disease in the United States.

• Founder of Vida Pharmacal, focused on breakthrough parasitic disease treatments
• Filed the first veterinary drug patent for anti-T. cruzi activity in dogs
• Principal scientist for the U.S. military working dog Chagas treatment study
• Veterinary lead for the Texas Chagas Task Force alongside the CDC and UT Health
• Pioneer in developing diagnostic and treatment protocols for infected dogs

Your pet is being treated by the same expert helping shape how Chagas disease is understood nationwide.

Get In Touch

Chagas disease progresses in stages. The earlier it is identified:

• The more treatment options are available
• The better heart damage can be managed
• The higher the chance of improving quality of life

Waiting can mean irreversible cardiac damage.

Early Detection. Advanced Treatment. Led by One of the Nation’s Top Experts.

Do not wait for symptoms to appear.

Chagas disease is often silent early on, but warning signs may include:

• Lethargy or decreased activity
• Fainting or collapse
• Irregular heartbeat
• Difficulty breathing
• Unexplained weight loss

If your dog spends time outdoors, lives in Central Texas, or has been exposed to insects, they may be at risk even without symptoms.

If your dog may have been exposed to kissing bugs, do not wait. Chagas disease can silently damage the heart before symptoms appear. Early diagnosis can make the difference.

At Central Texas Vet, we go beyond standard testing.
Dr. Madigan is actively developing advanced serologic testing methods to improve detection accuracy.

Your dog’s evaluation may include:

• Comprehensive physical exam
• Cardiac screening
• Specialized blood testing for T. cruzi
• Advanced diagnostics when needed

Early detection allows for better management and improved outcomes.

Chagas disease is caused by the parasite Trypanosoma cruzi, transmitted by “kissing bugs” commonly found in Texas.
Once infected, dogs may appear normal while the parasite attacks the heart and other organs.

Without intervention, Chagas can lead to:

• Heart disease
• Arrhythmias
• Sudden death

Year Round Parasite Prevention for Dogs and Cats: Why Protection Matters More Than Ever
Parasites remain one of the most common health risks affecting both dogs and cats. Fleas, ticks, intestinal parasites, and heartworms can cause significant illness, discomfort, and long term health complications when prevention is inconsistent. Because many parasites can survive in indoor environments or remain active during mild weather, veterinarians recommend year round parasite prevention for dogs and cats rather than seasonal treatment.Understanding how parasites affect pets and how preventive medications work allows pet owners to make informed decisions about protecting their animals from avoidable diseases.
Why Parasite Prevention Is Essential for Pet Health
Parasites affect pets in several ways. Some feed on blood or skin tissue, while others invade internal organs and interfere with normal body function. Infections may begin with mild symptoms but can progress to serious health issues when left untreated.External parasites such as fleas and ticks can trigger allergic reactions, transmit infectious diseases, and cause anemia in severe infestations. Internal parasites including roundworms, hookworms, and heartworms affect the gastrointestinal tract, lungs, and cardiovascular system.Consistent parasite prevention for pets helps interrupt the life cycle of these organisms before infection occurs. Preventive medications are designed to eliminate parasites during early stages and reduce environmental contamination.
Fleas: A Common but Serious Parasite
Fleas are among the most widespread parasites affecting dogs and cats. These insects reproduce rapidly and can infest homes, bedding, and outdoor environments. Even a small flea population can quickly grow into a larger infestation.Pets with flea infestations may experience intense itching, hair loss, and skin infections. Some animals develop flea allergy dermatitis, a condition in which even a single flea bite can trigger severe itching and inflammation. Fleas can also transmit tapeworms and cause blood loss in young or small pets.Maintaining consistent flea prevention for dogs and cats prevents infestations from developing and protects pets from these complications.
Ticks and the Diseases They Transmit
Ticks are another significant parasite risk, particularly for pets that spend time outdoors. These parasites attach to the skin and feed on blood for several days. During feeding, ticks can transmit infectious organisms that cause diseases affecting the joints, immune system, and internal organs.Common tick-borne diseases may lead to fever, lethargy, joint pain, and decreased appetite. Because symptoms may not appear immediately, early prevention is the most effective strategy.Using reliable tick prevention for dogs helps reduce the likelihood of tick attachment and decreases the risk of disease transmission.
Heartworm Disease: A Serious Mosquito-Borne Infection
Heartworm disease is transmitted through mosquito bites and primarily affects dogs, although cats can also become infected. Once inside the body, heartworm larvae migrate through the bloodstream and eventually reach the heart and lungs.Adult heartworms can interfere with circulation and damage the cardiovascular system. Dogs with heartworm disease may develop coughing, fatigue, difficulty exercising, or weight loss. In advanced cases, heart failure may occur.Because treatment is complex and can carry medical risks, veterinarians emphasize heartworm prevention for dogs as the safest and most effective approach.
Intestinal Parasites in Dogs and Cats
Pets can also be exposed to intestinal parasites through contaminated soil, infected prey, or contact with infected animals. Common intestinal parasites include roundworms, hookworms, whipworms, and tapeworms. These parasites may cause symptoms such as diarrhea, vomiting, poor coat condition, or weight loss. Some intestinal parasites can also affect humans under certain circumstances, making prevention important for the entire household.Routine screening and preventive medications help manage intestinal parasites in pets and reduce the spread of infection.
Veterinary Preventive Medications Provide Broad Protection
Modern veterinary preventive medications often protect against multiple parasites at once. These treatments may be available in topical, chewable, or oral formulations and are designed to interrupt parasite life cycles before infection becomes established.Depending on the product prescribed, preventive medications may protect pets from fleas, ticks, heartworms, ear mites, and certain intestinal parasites. By addressing several parasites with a single treatment, these medications simplify parasite prevention for dogs and cats and help ensure consistent protection.Your veterinarian can recommend the most appropriate prevention strategy based on your pet’s lifestyle, age, and geographic exposure risks.
Why Year Round Prevention Is Recommended
Many pet owners associate parasites with warm weather, but fleas, ticks, and mosquitoes can remain active throughout the year in many regions. Indoor environments also allow parasites to survive regardless of outdoor conditions.Even missing a single dose of preventive medication can allow parasites to develop and begin reproducing. Maintaining year round parasite prevention ensures that pets remain protected from continuous exposure.Consistent prevention also reduces parasite populations in the environment, protecting other pets in the household.
Routine Veterinary Care Supports Effective Prevention
Preventive medications are most effective when combined with routine veterinary care. Regular wellness visits allow veterinarians to evaluate parasite risks, monitor overall health, and adjust prevention strategies as pets age.Veterinarians may also recommend routine fecal testing to detect intestinal parasites and periodic testing to confirm pets remain free from heartworm infection. These evaluations help ensure that preventive plans remain effective over time.
Protecting Pets from Preventable Diseases
Parasites are common but largely preventable health threats for dogs and cats. With consistent veterinary guidance and reliable preventive care, pet owners can significantly reduce the risk of infection and protect their pets’ long term health.Maintaining year round parasite prevention for dogs and cats helps safeguard pets from discomfort, disease, and the complications associated with parasitic infections. If you have questions about parasite prevention or would like to establish a prevention plan tailored to your pet’s lifestyle, schedule a visit with your nearest United Veterinary Care clinic.

Learn why parasite prevention for dogs and cats is essential year round. Understand how fleas, ticks, intestinal parasites, and heartworms affect pets and how veterinary preventive care protects their health.
