Dr. Roy Madigan, D.V.M., is not just a veterinarian. He is one of the leading experts in canine Chagas disease in the United States.

• Founder of Vida Pharmacal, focused on breakthrough parasitic disease treatments
• Filed the first veterinary drug patent for anti-T. cruzi activity in dogs
• Principal scientist for the U.S. military working dog Chagas treatment study
• Veterinary lead for the Texas Chagas Task Force alongside the CDC and UT Health
• Pioneer in developing diagnostic and treatment protocols for infected dogs

Your pet is being treated by the same expert helping shape how Chagas disease is understood nationwide.

Get In Touch

Chagas disease progresses in stages. The earlier it is identified:

• The more treatment options are available
• The better heart damage can be managed
• The higher the chance of improving quality of life

Waiting can mean irreversible cardiac damage.

Early Detection. Advanced Treatment. Led by One of the Nation’s Top Experts.

Do not wait for symptoms to appear.

Chagas disease is often silent early on, but warning signs may include:

• Lethargy or decreased activity
• Fainting or collapse
• Irregular heartbeat
• Difficulty breathing
• Unexplained weight loss

If your dog spends time outdoors, lives in Central Texas, or has been exposed to insects, they may be at risk even without symptoms.

If your dog may have been exposed to kissing bugs, do not wait. Chagas disease can silently damage the heart before symptoms appear. Early diagnosis can make the difference.

At Central Texas Vet, we go beyond standard testing.
Dr. Madigan is actively developing advanced serologic testing methods to improve detection accuracy.

Your dog’s evaluation may include:

• Comprehensive physical exam
• Cardiac screening
• Specialized blood testing for T. cruzi
• Advanced diagnostics when needed

Early detection allows for better management and improved outcomes.

Chagas disease is caused by the parasite Trypanosoma cruzi, transmitted by “kissing bugs” commonly found in Texas.
Once infected, dogs may appear normal while the parasite attacks the heart and other organs.

Without intervention, Chagas can lead to:

• Heart disease
• Arrhythmias
• Sudden death

Questions? We Have Answers

If your dog may be at risk, schedule an evaluation today and get answers from one of the leading experts in the field.

How Routine Veterinary Care Supports the Human Animal Bond
The relationship between people and their pets is built on trust, consistency, and shared daily experiences. This connection, often referred to as the human animal bond, plays a meaningful role in emotional well being, companionship, and overall quality of life. One of the most important factors in maintaining this bond is routine veterinary care, which supports both the physical health of pets and the strength of their relationship with their owners.
Why Preventive Care Is Essential for the Human Animal Bond
Healthy pets are more active, engaged, and comfortable in their daily lives. When a pet is free from pain or illness, they are more likely to participate in routines such as walks, play, and social interaction. These shared activities strengthen the connection between pets and their families.Preventive veterinary care focuses on identifying health concerns early, often before symptoms become noticeable. Early detection helps avoid more serious medical issues, reduces discomfort, and supports long term wellness. By maintaining a pet’s health proactively, owners are able to preserve the consistency and companionship that define the human animal bond.
The Role of Pet Wellness Exams
Regular pet wellness exams are a key component of routine care. During these visits, veterinarians assess multiple aspects of a pet’s health, including weight, mobility, dental condition, heart and lung function, and overall behavior. These exams provide an opportunity to:

Detect early signs of disease

Monitor changes in aging pets

Adjust nutrition and lifestyle recommendations

Address subtle behavioral concerns

Because pets often hide signs of illness, routine exams are essential for identifying issues that may not be visible at home. Early intervention allows pets to remain comfortable and active, supporting their ability to engage with their families.
How Veterinary Care Supports Pet Behavior
Behavior and health are closely connected. Changes in behavior, such as withdrawal, irritability, or decreased activity, may be linked to underlying medical conditions. Addressing these issues through routine veterinary care helps restore normal behavior and improves a pet’s overall quality of life.Veterinarians can also provide guidance on:

Socialization and environmental enrichment

Age appropriate activity levels

Managing anxiety or stress related behaviors

Adjusting routines during life stage transitions

When pets feel physically well, they are more likely to interact positively with their environment and the people around them.
Preventive Care and Long Term Quality of Life
Consistent preventive veterinary care supports long term health by reducing the risk of chronic disease. Vaccinations, parasite prevention, and routine screenings all contribute to maintaining a stable and healthy baseline. As pets age, regular veterinary visits become even more important. Senior pets may develop conditions that require monitoring or adjustment in care. Identifying these changes early allows for timely intervention and helps maintain comfort and mobility.A pet that remains healthy over time is more able to continue participating in family routines, strengthening the bond that develops over years of companionship.
Supporting Emotional Well Being Through Pet Health
The human animal bond is not only beneficial for pets but also for their owners. Pets provide companionship, reduce stress, and encourage routine. However, when a pet becomes ill or uncomfortable, this bond can be affected.Routine veterinary care helps maintain the stability of this relationship by minimizing unexpected health issues. Knowing that a pet is healthy provides reassurance for owners and allows them to focus on positive interactions rather than managing illness. In this way, maintaining a pet’s health also supports the emotional well being of the household.
Building Trust Through Veterinary Relationships
Regular visits to a veterinary clinic also help pets become more comfortable with handling, examinations, and new environments. This reduces stress during future visits and allows for more thorough evaluations. For pet owners, establishing an ongoing relationship with a veterinary team provides a trusted resource for guidance. This partnership supports informed decision making and ensures that care remains consistent throughout the pet’s life.
Consistency Creates Stronger Bonds
Routine plays a significant role in strengthening the connection between pets and their owners. Feeding schedules, exercise, and veterinary visits all contribute to a structured and predictable environment. When pets know what to expect, they are more confident and relaxed. This stability enhances their ability to engage socially and emotionally with their families. Regular veterinary care is a key part of this routine, reinforcing long term health and well being.
When to Schedule Veterinary Visits
Most pets benefit from at least annual wellness exams, though younger pets, seniors, or those with medical conditions may require more frequent visits. Pet owners should also schedule an exam if they notice changes in behavior, appetite, mobility, or overall energy levels.Early evaluation helps address concerns before they affect a pet’s quality of life or the strength of the human animal bond.
Healthy Pets Strengthen Lasting Connections
The human animal bond is strongest when pets are healthy, comfortable, and able to fully participate in daily life. Routine veterinary care plays a central role in maintaining this connection by supporting preventive health, early detection, and long term wellness.By prioritizing regular veterinary visits, pet owners can help ensure their pets remain active, engaged, and capable of providing the companionship that makes this bond so meaningful. To support your pet’s health and strengthen your connection, schedule a wellness exam with your nearest United Veterinary Care clinic.

Learn how routine veterinary care strengthens the human animal bond by supporting pet health, behavior, and long term well being for dogs and cats.
