Dr. Roy Madigan, D.V.M., is not just a veterinarian. He is one of the leading experts in canine Chagas disease in the United States.

• Founder of Vida Pharmacal, focused on breakthrough parasitic disease treatments
 • Filed the first veterinary drug patent for anti-T. cruzi activity in dogs
 • Principal scientist for the U.S. military working dog Chagas treatment study
 • Veterinary lead for the Texas Chagas Task Force alongside the CDC and UT Health
 • Pioneer in developing diagnostic and treatment protocols for infected dogs

Your pet is being treated by the same expert helping shape how Chagas disease is understood nationwide.

Get In Touch

Chagas disease progresses in stages. The earlier it is identified:

 • The more treatment options are available
 • The better heart damage can be managed
 • The higher the chance of improving quality of life

Waiting can mean irreversible cardiac damage.

Early Detection. Advanced Treatment. Led by One of the Nation’s Top Experts.

Do not wait for symptoms to appear.

Chagas disease is often silent early on, but warning signs may include:

 • Lethargy or decreased activity
 • Fainting or collapse
 • Irregular heartbeat
 • Difficulty breathing
 • Unexplained weight loss

If your dog spends time outdoors, lives in Central Texas, or has been exposed to insects, they may be at risk even without symptoms.

If your dog may have been exposed to kissing bugs, do not wait. Chagas disease can silently damage the heart before symptoms appear. Early diagnosis can make the difference.

At Central Texas Vet, we go beyond standard testing.
Dr. Madigan is actively developing advanced serologic testing methods to improve detection accuracy.

Your dog’s evaluation may include:

 • Comprehensive physical exam
 • Cardiac screening
 • Specialized blood testing for T. cruzi
 • Advanced diagnostics when needed

Early detection allows for better management and improved outcomes.

Chagas disease is caused by the parasite Trypanosoma cruzi, transmitted by “kissing bugs” commonly found in Texas.
Once infected, dogs may appear normal while the parasite attacks the heart and other organs.

Without intervention, Chagas can lead to:

 • Heart disease
 • Arrhythmias
 • Sudden death

As a dog owner, it’s your responsibility to keep your furry companion safe and healthy. Unfortunately, there are many foods that we humans enjoy that are extremely harmful to dogs. One of the most common, and possibly most dangerous, is chocolate. Unfortunately for our four-legged friends, chocolate contains a substance called theobromine, which is toxic to dogs. In this blog post, we will explore why chocolate is bad for dogs and what you can do to keep your pooch safe.Theobromine is a substance that is found in chocolate, and it’s what makes it such a popular and beloved treat for humans. However, because dogs do not metabolize theobromine in the same way that humans do, it can quickly accumulate to toxic levels in a dog’s system. Symptoms of chocolate poisoning in dogs can range from mild to severe and can include vomiting, diarrhea, tremors, seizures, and even death. The severity of the poisoning depends on several factors, including the dog’s size, the amount of chocolate consumed, and the type of chocolate. For instance, dark chocolate contains more theobromine than milk chocolate, making it even more toxic to dogs. It’s also important to note that other products containing chocolate, such as cocoa powder and baking chocolate, can be equally dangerous to your furry friend. If you suspect that your dog has eaten chocolate, it’s important to seek veterinary care immediately. Treatment for chocolate poisoning typically involves inducing vomiting to remove as much chocolate from the dog’s system as possible. In severe cases, hospitalization and supportive care may be necessary.Fortunately, you can take steps to prevent chocolate poisoning in your dog. The first and most important step is to keep all chocolate and chocolate-containing products out of reach of your dog. This includes chocolate bars, candy, and baked goods like brownies and cakes. You should also be aware of the symptoms of chocolate poisoning so that you can seek treatment immediately, if necessary. In conclusion, chocolate is a delicious treat that can be enjoyed by humans but is extremely dangerous for dogs. The theobromine in chocolate can quickly build up to toxic levels in a dog’s system, leading to mild to severe symptoms and even death. As a responsible pet owner, you must keep all chocolate and chocolate-containing products out of reach of your four-legged friend and seek veterinary care immediately if you suspect that your dog has consumed any. By taking these steps, you can help keep your dog safe and healthy for years to come.

As a dog owner, it's your responsibility to keep your furry companion safe and healthy. Unfortunately, there are many foods that we humans enjoy that are extremely harmful to dogs.
