Dr. Roy Madigan, D.V.M., is not just a veterinarian. He is one of the leading experts in canine Chagas disease in the United States.

• Founder of Vida Pharmacal, focused on breakthrough parasitic disease treatments
• Filed the first veterinary drug patent for anti-T. cruzi activity in dogs
• Principal scientist for the U.S. military working dog Chagas treatment study
• Veterinary lead for the Texas Chagas Task Force alongside the CDC and UT Health
• Pioneer in developing diagnostic and treatment protocols for infected dogs

Your pet is being treated by the same expert helping shape how Chagas disease is understood nationwide.

Get In Touch

Chagas disease progresses in stages. The earlier it is identified:

• The more treatment options are available
• The better heart damage can be managed
• The higher the chance of improving quality of life

Waiting can mean irreversible cardiac damage.

Early Detection. Advanced Treatment. Led by One of the Nation’s Top Experts.

Do not wait for symptoms to appear.

Chagas disease is often silent early on, but warning signs may include:

• Lethargy or decreased activity
• Fainting or collapse
• Irregular heartbeat
• Difficulty breathing
• Unexplained weight loss

If your dog spends time outdoors, lives in Central Texas, or has been exposed to insects, they may be at risk even without symptoms.

If your dog may have been exposed to kissing bugs, do not wait. Chagas disease can silently damage the heart before symptoms appear. Early diagnosis can make the difference.

At Central Texas Vet, we go beyond standard testing.
Dr. Madigan is actively developing advanced serologic testing methods to improve detection accuracy.

Your dog’s evaluation may include:

• Comprehensive physical exam
• Cardiac screening
• Specialized blood testing for T. cruzi
• Advanced diagnostics when needed

Early detection allows for better management and improved outcomes.

Chagas disease is caused by the parasite Trypanosoma cruzi, transmitted by “kissing bugs” commonly found in Texas.
Once infected, dogs may appear normal while the parasite attacks the heart and other organs.

Without intervention, Chagas can lead to:

• Heart disease
• Arrhythmias
• Sudden death

Cold Temperatures: How Much Is Too Cold for Pets?

Cold weather affects pets differently than many owners expect. Even thick coated breeds can develop cold stress if temperatures drop quickly. Short haired, senior, underweight, and very young pets are especially vulnerable. Extended time outdoors in freezing temperatures increases the risk of frostbite and hypothermia. Ears, paws, and the tip of the tail are the most susceptible areas for cold related damage because circulation decreases in these tissues when the body attempts to stay warm. Pets showing signs such as shivering, stiffness, reluctance to walk, or seeking constant shelter should be brought indoors immediately. Limiting outdoor time, providing warm shelter, and using pet safe winter gear can protect vulnerable pets.

Salt and Ice Melt Products: A Common Winter Irritant

Sidewalk salt and ice melt chemicals are widespread during winter, and many products can irritate or burn a pet’s paws. Salt crystals may become lodged between paw pads, causing redness, inflammation, or cracking. Pets often lick irritated paws, leading to ingestion of salts or chemicals that can cause digestive upset or electrolyte imbalances. After walks, rinsing or wiping paws helps remove residue before irritation occurs. Using pet booties or applying paw balms designed to create a protective barrier can also reduce exposure. When choosing de-icing agents for home use, selecting pet safe formulations lowers the risk of accidental irritation or ingestion.

Antifreeze: A Deadly Winter Toxicity

Antifreeze, typically containing ethylene glycol, is one of the most dangerous winter hazards for pets. Even small amounts can cause severe kidney damage and may be fatal without rapid treatment. Antifreeze has a naturally sweet taste that attracts animals, increasing the risk of accidental ingestion. Symptoms of antifreeze poisoning can include vomiting, unsteadiness, excessive thirst, and lethargy, followed by more serious neurologic or kidney related signs. Any suspected exposure requires immediate emergency veterinary care, as early treatment is critical. Storing antifreeze securely, cleaning spills promptly, and checking for vehicle leaks can prevent accidental ingestion.

Winter Grooming and Skin Considerations

Cold air and indoor heating can dry a pet’s skin, reducing natural protective oils. This can lead to itchiness, flaking, or irritation. Regular brushing helps maintain coat health and improves circulation. Bathing should be done with gentle, pet safe shampoos, as overbathing removes moisture from the skin. Snow and ice can also form small clumps in long haired pets’ fur, causing discomfort. Keeping fur trimmed around the paws and legs can make winter walks more comfortable.

Indoor Winter Risks

Winter months often mean more time indoors, which can introduce additional hazards. Space heaters may attract pets seeking warmth but can cause burns if touched or knocked over. Pets may also curl up against radiators or heating vents, leading to mild thermal injuries. Ensuring safe distances and supervised use of heating equipment helps reduce risks. Dry indoor air can also irritate airways in some pets, especially those with respiratory sensitivities. Providing adequate humidity levels supports respiratory comfort.

Exercise and Activity Adjustments

Reduced outdoor time during winter can lead to decreased activity and weight gain. Maintaining a healthy routine is important for physical and mental well-being. Shorter but more frequent walks, indoor enrichment activities, and puzzle feeders keep pets active and stimulated even when weather limits outdoor play. For senior pets, cold weather can worsen joint stiffness. Using supportive bedding and maintaining consistent exercise helps minimize discomfort.

How to Keep Pets Safe All Winter

Pet safety in winter depends on awareness and preparation. Protecting paws from salt, preventing antifreeze exposure, and limiting time in freezing temperatures all reduce the risk of winter related injuries. Monitoring pets closely during cold weather and providing appropriate shelter, nutrition, and hydration ensure that dogs and cats stay healthy throughout the season. Early veterinary attention is recommended if a pet shows signs of cold stress, paw irritation, or suspected toxin exposure.

Winter Safety Starts With Awareness

Winter hazards are manageable when pet owners understand the risks and take proactive steps to protect their animals. Whether dealing with sidewalk salt, freezing temperatures, or antifreeze spills, simple precautions can prevent serious health issues. If you have concerns about your pet’s safety during cold weather or notice signs of irritation or illness, schedule a visit with your nearest United Veterinary Care clinic for guidance and winter care recommendations.

Winter brings a unique set of challenges for dogs and cats. While many pets enjoy cold weather activities, winter conditions can lead to temperature related injuries, chemical exposures, and toxic hazards that are not present during other seasons. Understanding the most common winter risks helps pet owners take the right precautions to keep their pets safe and comfortable in colder months.
